Our Journey Begins
One Sunday in autumn, the kind of day when the light turns soft and gold and the air smells of damp leaves, the phone rang. It was Martyn, our mechanic.
“I’ve found something,” he said. “A lonely, broken Abarth on Facebook Marketplace in Dudley.”
We didn’t hesitate. Within the hour, Mart was already climbing into his recovery truck, the engine growling as he pulled away. By the time he returned, the little car was on the back—£1,200 of non-runner, its body quiet and still. When we opened the bonnet, the truth was plain: the engine was scrap.
Most people would have walked away. We didn’t. We looked at the silent engine bay and saw not a problem, but an invitation.
Within weeks, the garage had become a second home. An engine began to take shape on the bench—half-built, carefully pieced together from parts hunted across the internet. Nights blurred into mornings. Forums, diagrams, technical sheets, late-night messages to suppliers. We researched until our eyes burned and the coffee went cold.
We hadn’t planned for it to go this deep. Most Abarth owners stop somewhere sensible when they modify a 1.4 T-Jet. We kept going. Spare evenings disappeared. Weekends vanished. Holidays were postponed without a second thought. The car stopped being a project and started becoming something else entirely—a quiet obsession that lived in the space between us.
The goal settled in without anyone having to say it out loud. This little race car was going to be one of the fastest 1.4 T-Jet Abarths in Europe.
